How the days are calculated

  • The day pillar comes from the unbroken cycle of sixty days, the same one as in our BaZi calculator.
  • The month is the solar month of the Chinese calendar: it begins at one of the twelve Jie solar terms (Li Chun around 4 February, Jing Zhe around 6 March, and so on), calculated from the Sun's position, not at the new Moon.
  • The Day Officer follows from the month's branch and the day's branch. On the day a Jie begins, the officer of the day before repeats, as the Qing manual 《協紀辨方書》 states (卷四: 每月交節,則疊兩值日).
  • The clashing animal is the one of the branch opposite the day's branch; the almanac line also names the clashing pillar and the Sha (煞) direction of the day, here as printed: a Rat, Dragon or Monkey day has Sha in the south, an Ox, Snake or Rooster day in the east, a Tiger, Horse or Dog day in the north, a Rabbit, Goat or Pig day in the west.
  • Clock: days are the calendar days of China Standard Time (UTC+8), which is also the time of Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, as most almanacs print them. In Europe or America the date of a solar term can fall a day earlier.

The table used for the five events

The favourable and the avoided officers come from one book only: 《欽定協紀辨方書》 (Xieji Bianfang Shu, the almanac manual compiled for the Qianlong court in 1739), chapter 11, "用事", the lines 嫁娶 (wedding), 移徙 (moving house), 開市 (opening a business), 立券交易 (contracts and trade) and 出行 (travel). We use only the Day Officers those lines name; the other day spirits of the same lines (such as 天德, 三合 or 劫煞) are not calculated here.

This is what the almanac tradition assigns to each day, according to one classical table. It is not advice and not a prediction: no date makes an event go well or badly, and nothing here promises luck. Printed almanacs also weigh many other day spirits, so a family almanac or a date-selection master may list different days. Choose your dates for your own reasons.
