Manglik (Mangal Dosha)

Also known as: manglikmangalikmangal doshamangal doshkuja doshakuja doshamchevvai doshambhauma doshaMars doshamanglik doshaमांगलिकमंगल दोष

Manglik, or Mangal dosha, is the Vedic name for a chart in which Mars occupies the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house; tradition considers it mainly when two charts are compared for marriage and knows many conditions that cancel or soften it.

Mangal is the Sanskrit and Hindi name for Mars, and dosha means a flaw or imbalance. A person whose kundli contains Mangal dosha is called manglik. In South India the same idea is known as kuja dosha or chevvai dosham. It is one of the best known terms of Vedic astrology, mostly because families in India often check it before an arranged marriage.

The classical rule is simple: Mars placed in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. These houses are linked with the self and the body, family and speech, home and peace of mind, partnership, shared resources and the hidden, and with expenses and the bed. Mars stands for energy, courage, drive and conflict, and tradition says that in these houses its heat touches the areas of daily life together. Some schools, especially in the north, leave out the second house and use only five positions.

Houses can be counted from different points. Most astrologers check Mars from the Lagna and also from the Moon; some add Venus. AstroSensus, in its Vedic view, counts houses whole-sign, sign by sign, and checks Mars both from the Lagna and from the Moon. A placement found from both points is usually described as stronger than one found from a single point.

Because six of the twelve houses qualify from a single reference point, roughly half of all charts are manglik by the basic rule, and more when several points are used. That alone shows why classical texts list many exceptions. The most commonly cited cancellations are: both partners are manglik; Mars is in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn; Mars receives the aspect of Jupiter or is joined with it; Mars falls in particular signs for particular houses, a list that differs between texts; the Lagna is Cancer or Leo, for which Mars is a yogakaraka. A folk belief also holds that the dosha softens after the age of 28, though this rule does not appear in the classical sources.

Mangal dosha is not a verdict on whether a relationship can work. In a careful reading it is one signal among many: the condition of the seventh house and its lord, Venus, the navamsa, guna milan and the running dashas are read alongside it. Psychologically it can point to a strong temperament that needs room for activity, sport, honest conflict and shared goals. Many experienced astrologers warn against frightening people with this term and point out that a large share of happy couples include a manglik partner.

Remedies mentioned in tradition, such as prayers to Hanuman, fasting on Tuesdays or symbolic ceremonies, are cultural and religious practices. They are not required to have a good relationship.

Frequently asked questions

Which houses make a chart Manglik?

By the classical rule, Mars in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. Some northern schools leave out the second house. The houses are usually counted from the Lagna and also from the Moon, sometimes from Venus too.

Can Mangal dosha be cancelled?

Classical texts give many cancellations: both partners being manglik, Mars in its own sign or exalted, the aspect or conjunction of Jupiter, a Cancer or Leo Lagna, and certain sign and house combinations. Because so many charts meet the basic rule, these exceptions apply often.

Should two people avoid marriage because one of them is Manglik?

Tradition does not treat Mangal dosha as a final judgement, and most astrologers read it only together with the seventh house, Venus, the navamsa and guna milan. It can describe a temperament with a lot of energy, which a relationship can make room for. Decisions about a partner rest on much more than one placement.
