Guna Milan

Guna milan, or Ashtakoota matching, is the traditional Vedic method of comparing two birth charts for marriage: eight factors (kutas) based on the Moon's nakshatra and Moon sign of each person give up to 36 points, and 18 is the customary minimum.
In many Indian families the comparison of two kundlis is a natural step before an arranged marriage, and guna milan is its best known part. The name means matching of qualities. The method is called Ashtakoota, from ashta, eight, and koota, a group or factor. It uses only two data points from each chart: the nakshatra of the Moon, one of the 27 lunar mansions, and the sign in which the Moon stands. Because the Moon in Jyotish represents the mind and emotional life, the comparison focuses on temperament and emotional rhythm.
The eight kutas carry rising weights, so their sum is 36. Varna, worth 1 point, compares the spiritual or working temperament of the two Moon signs. Vashya, 2 points, describes mutual attraction and influence. Tara, 3 points, counts the distance between the two nakshatras and reads it as a measure of mutual wellbeing. Yoni, 4 points, assigns each nakshatra an animal symbol and compares physical and instinctive compatibility. Graha Maitri, 5 points, looks at whether the lords of the two Moon signs are friends, neutral or enemies, which is read as intellectual and emotional closeness. Gana, 6 points, sorts nakshatras into deva, manushya and rakshasa natures. Bhakoot, 7 points, depends on the distance between the two Moon signs. Nadi, 8 points, divides the nakshatras into three groups; partners in the same group receive zero.
The tradition usually treats a score below 18 as weak, 18 to 24 as acceptable, 25 to 32 as good and 33 or more as very good. Two results receive extra attention. Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same nadi, and Bhakoot dosha arises with certain sign distances, such as six and eight or two and twelve. Classical texts list exceptions for both, for example when the Moon sign lords are friends or the same planet.
Guna milan has clear limits. It looks only at the Moon, so two people with the same score can have very different charts. For that reason astrologers combine it with a check of Mangal dosha, the seventh house and its lord, Venus, the navamsa and the dashas. In South India a related method with ten factors, Dasha Porutham, is more common than Ashtakoota.
AstroSensus calculates the eight kutas in its free Kundli matching tool, without an account. It takes the sidereal Moon of both people with the Lahiri ayanamsa and reads every kuta from a traditional table: the Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana and Bhakoot tables of Jagannatha Hora, Varna by the element of the Moon sign, Vashya with Sagittarius and Capricorn split at 15 degrees, and Tara by the classical count of nine. Published tables differ in a few cells, so the method is named on the page. It shows the points of every kuta, names Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana dosha without applying the contested exceptions, checks Manglik in both charts, and when a time of birth is unknown it gives the range the score can take on that day. In an account set to Vedic astrology the same card appears on the relationship of two people. A score is a starting point for talking about different rhythms and needs, not a ruling about whether two people belong together.
Frequently asked questions
How many points are needed in guna milan?
The maximum is 36. Tradition treats 18 as the minimum acceptable score, 25 to 32 as good, and 33 or more as very good. Astrologers also look at Nadi and Bhakoot dosha and at the rest of both charts, so a score is never read in isolation.
What are the eight kutas?
Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). All of them are calculated from the Moon's nakshatra and the Moon sign of both people, and together they give 36 points.
Is a low guna milan score a reason to give up a relationship?
Not by itself. The method compares only the Moon in two charts, and classical texts list exceptions even for its strongest warnings. Many astrologers read a low score as a sign of different emotional rhythms that partners can understand and talk about, alongside the seventh house, Venus and the navamsa.
