North Node line (Rahu and Ketu)

Also known as: Rahu line, Ketu line, lunar node lines

In astrocartography, a North Node line marks the places where, at the moment of your birth, the North Node — Rahu in Vedic astrology — stood on one of the four angles; the lines of the South Node, Ketu, lie on the opposite angles.

The lunar nodes are not celestial bodies but points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Western tradition links the North Node with the direction of growth and with what is new and not yet familiar; the South Node with what is known, with habits and with letting go. In Vedic astrology the same points are Rahu and Ketu, treated as shadow grahas with a very distinct meaning. On an astrocartography map the nodes have lines just like the planets: MC, IC, ASC and DSC.

The systems differ in one technical detail here. The Western map in AstroSensus draws the true North Node, and the Vedic map draws Rahu as the mean node, following Jyotish tradition. The difference between the true and the mean node is small, usually within about a degree and a half, so the lines of the two variants lie close together but not always in exactly the same place. Ketu always stands exactly opposite Rahu, so its MC line is Rahu's IC line and its ASC line is Rahu's DSC line — and vice versa. That is why the map does not draw Ketu separately, and the place check reads Ketu from Rahu's line on the opposite angle.

In a Western reading the North Node on the MC is associated with a sense of direction and growth through a public role; in the Intention Travel goal table it is an additional line for "Career" and "A new beginning". On the IC it means growth through home, family and the search for roots. On the ASC it is associated with feeling on your own path and with new experiences — it is a main line for the "A new beginning" goal. On the DSC it is linked with encounters that push you to grow.

In a Vedic reading Rahu is more ambivalent. Rahu on the MC means strong career ambition and a hunger for recognition that is sometimes hard to satisfy; on the IC, restlessness around home and a wish for a new kind of belonging; on the ASC, novelty, foreignness and the urge to cross boundaries; on the DSC, fascinating, unexpected partners from outside the familiar circle. In the Vedic goal table Rahu's lines are demanding for career, visibility and home, among others.

Ketu has the opposite tone: distance and letting go. Ketu on the MC means distance from career and a search for meaning beyond recognition; on the IC, quiet, retreat and a spiritual home; on the ASC, introspection and less attachment to image; on the DSC, relationships that feel long familiar, or distance within a partnership. In the Vedic goal table Ketu on the ASC and on the IC are main lines for "Spiritual growth".

Because a node is not a planet, its lines are read more as a direction than as an "energy". Closeness is judged as for other lines, in three bands: up to 150 km very close, up to 300 km close and up to 600 km within the wider band of the line. A node line does not point to destiny or to a place where something "has to" happen. It raises the question of what you are learning in a given place — and what you might leave behind there.
