Neptune line

Also known as: Neptune lines, Neptune on the ASC, Neptune on the DSC

In astrocartography, a Neptune line marks the places on Earth where, at the moment of your birth, Neptune was culminating (MC), beneath your feet (IC), rising (ASC) or setting (DSC).

In a birth chart Neptune describes inspiration, imagination, spirituality, compassion and longing — and also blurred boundaries and illusion. Its lines on an astrocartography map are the most ambiguous of all. For creative and spiritual goals tradition reads them as favourable; for relationships and visibility, as demanding. The same line can therefore mean inspiration or feeling lost, depending on what you are looking for in a place.

Neptune on the MC is associated with creative, spiritual or caring work — and with a less clear-cut public image. It is often described as a place for art, music, film or helping others, and at the same time as a place where a clear career path is harder to find. In the Intention Travel goal table it is an additional line for "Creativity" and "Spiritual growth", but a demanding one for "Visibility".

Tradition links Neptune on the IC with a dream of home, nearness to nature or water, and blurred boundaries in family life. It is a main line for the "Spiritual growth" goal and an additional one for "Holiday and rest" — a place where you can drift off, but where order in everyday matters is harder to keep.

Neptune on the ASC is associated with sensitivity, inspiration and picking up the moods around you. In the goal table it is a main line for "Creativity" and "Spiritual growth" and an additional one for "Holiday and rest". It is also described as a line where the boundary between what is yours and what belongs to others blurs more easily — a good reason to look after your sleep and daily rhythm.

Tradition links Neptune on the DSC with romance and idealising partners. Relationships here can be full of tenderness and wonder, but also of disappointment when the image of the other person meets reality. It is worth looking closely. In the goal table it is a demanding line for "Love".

Neptune appears only on the Western map. Vedic astrology does not use planets invisible to the naked eye, so a Vedic map does not draw Neptune lines. Neptune takes about 165 years to go round the zodiac, so for a whole generation it stands in a similar part of the sky; it is the birth time and the turning of the Earth that decide where its lines run. In Intention Travel, Neptune's transits to the planet of a line create only demanding windows.

Neptune lines are worth checking against places that have always felt a little magical, or places where it was hard to find your footing. Closeness is read in three bands: up to 150 km very close, up to 300 km close and up to 600 km within the wider band of the line. A Neptune line announces neither revelation nor disappointment. It shows where tradition sees more imagination and fewer outlines, and asks what you are really looking for there.
