Mars line
Also known as: Mars lines, Mars on the ASC, Mars on the MC
In astrocartography, a Mars line marks the places on Earth where, at the moment of your birth, Mars was culminating (MC), beneath your feet (IC), rising (ASC) or setting (DSC).
In a birth chart Mars describes drive, courage, competition, anger, the body and action. On an astrocartography map its lines are among those tradition reads as demanding: they bring energy, and friction too. That does not mean they should be avoided — rather, that near them it helps to have a good aim for that energy. In Intention Travel the Mars lines are shown in a separate "demanding" group, and they enter the main order of places only when you switch them on.
Mars on the MC is associated with ambition, competition and drive at work, and also with conflicts over position. It is often described as a line that favours building something fast and on a large scale, at the cost of more tension. In the goal table it is a demanding line for "Career".
Mars on the IC is a place where home may hold more movement and tension: energy for renovations and change, less calm. Tradition suggests watching boundaries here, and how disagreements get settled at home. A curious detail: in the Western goal table Mars on the IC is demanding for "Home and stability", while in the Vedic table it is an additional line, because Mangala is also read there as a force that protects home and land.
Mars on the ASC is associated with courage, sport, the body and quick action, but also with impatience and impulsiveness. In the Western goal table it is a demanding line for "Love", "Creativity", "Holiday and rest" and "A new beginning"; in the Vedic table it appears under "A new beginning" as an additional line. It shows well that the same line can mean drive or restlessness, depending on what you are looking for.
Tradition links Mars on the DSC with passionate relationships and direct partners — and with arguments. Near this line relationships can be intense; it helps to name your needs plainly before anger does it for you. In the goal table it is a demanding line for "Love" and "Connections".
Mars, called Mangala in Vedic astrology, appears on both the Western and the Vedic map with the same lines, because they do not depend on the zodiac. In Jyotish, Mangala is the graha of courage, energy, siblings and land, and the two traditions read it in a similar way: a force that can build or wound.
Mars lines are worth checking against places where there was a lot of energy or a lot of friction — a sports competition, an intense project, a stormy year. Closeness is read in three bands: up to 150 km very close, up to 300 km close and up to 600 km within the wider band of the line. A Mars line does not announce a conflict or an accident. It shows where tradition sees more drive, and asks where you want to direct it.
