How to read the Celtic Cross
Ten cards, five pairs and one synthesis. The guide walks through the cross, the staff and the outcome — and shows how to read the Year Ahead.

The Celtic Cross is the best-known classic tarot spread. It has ten cards, but it is not ten separate answers. It is one story about one matter, told from ten sides. This guide shows in which order to look at it.
What you need
- An AstroSensus account on the Family or Premium plan. The Celtic Cross counts as 2 draws from the monthly limit, and only a finished reading uses the limit.
- One matter that really occupies you. This spread works best with one question, not with a general "what lies ahead?".
Step by step
- Name the matter. In Tarot choose the Celtic Cross and write one sentence in the "What matter are you asking about?" field, for example "Does changing jobs make sense now?". The field is optional, but with it the synthesis is more concrete. The question does not change the cards.
- Choose the period. The month is the default, because such a matter usually unfolds over time. For an urgent decision choose a week, for a big change a year.
- Start in the middle. Card 1 is the Situation: where the matter stands. Card 2 lies across it — the Challenge, what crosses the matter. It is not always an obstacle; sometimes it adds strength. Ask: does this card hold the first one back, or does it reinforce it?
- Look at the cross around the centre. Below lies the Foundation (3), the deeper cause. Above the centre is the Possibility (5), where the matter may be heading. On the left the Past (4), on the right the Near future (6). The cross speaks about the matter itself: where it came from and where it is going.
- Move to the staff. The four cards on the right are read from the bottom: Your attitude (7), Surroundings (8), Hopes and fears (9) and the Outcome (10). The staff speaks about the people and circumstances around the matter.
- Read the cards in pairs. The reading does this in separate sections: situation and challenge (1+2), foundation and possibility (3+5), past and near future (4+6), attitude and surroundings (7+8), hopes and fears and the outcome (9+10). A pair shows whether the cards reinforce each other, contradict each other, or whether one answers the other.
- Check the patterns. Several Major Arcana mean the matter touches something bigger than everyday life. A dominant suit shows where most is happening: Cups are feelings, Wands action, Swords thoughts and conversations, Pentacles work, money and the body. Many reversed cards usually speak of energy that is blocked or turned inward. The app counts these patterns; the reading names them.
- Read the outcome as a direction, not a verdict. Card 10 shows where the matter is heading under present conditions. The synthesis also says what could change that — usually your attitude (7) and the possibility (5).
On a phone the cards are smaller, so each has a number, and under the spread a legend names every position and card. The legend also works in "Select for AstroChat" mode.
When the cards contradict each other
That is not a fault of the spread. A contradiction between hopes and the outcome, or between attitude and surroundings, is often the most important information in the whole reading: it shows where wishes and events part ways. Instead of hunting for the "right" interpretation, ask yourself which side feels closer today, and ask AstroChat about it.
The Year Ahead
This spread is read differently. The thirteenth card, the Theme of the year, lies in the middle of the circle and is the lens for everything, so the reading starts with it. The twelve cards around it are the months from this one, not from January. Read them by quarters: three months side by side say more than one. The same reading opens all month, so you can come back to it.
Good to know
The cards are a tool for reflection, not a prophecy. The reading does not answer "yes" or "no" and decides nothing — it shows possibilities and what is worth noticing. If you are not sure whether the Celtic Cross suits your question, the guide How to choose a tarot spread for your question helps.
