Annual profections are a Hellenistic timing technique in which the Ascendant moves forward one whole sign for each year of life, so that every year activates a different house. The domicile ruler of the sign reached that year is called the lord of the year.

Annual profections are one of the oldest and simplest timing techniques of Hellenistic astrology. The word comes from the Greek for advancing or sending forward. The method moves the Ascendant ahead by one whole sign for every year of life, and the house that results is the one the tradition treats as activated during that year. The technique is described by Vettius Valens in Book IV of his Anthology and by other authors of the period.

The counting is easy to follow. At birth, age 0, the profected Ascendant is the natal Ascendant, so the first house is activated. During the first year of life, from the first birthday to the second, the profection moves to the second house, then the third house, and so on. At age 11 it reaches the twelfth house. At age 12 the cycle returns to the first house, and it does so again at 24, 36 and 48. In general the house is found by dividing the age by twelve and counting the remainder from the first house. At age 30 the remainder is 6, so the profection lands on the seventh house.

Because the houses are whole-sign houses, each profection falls on a sign. That sign has a domicile ruler, the planet that rules it in the traditional scheme of seven planets: Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, the Sun rules Leo, the Moon rules Cancer, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and Venus rules Taurus and Libra. This ruler is the lord of the year, the time lord of that year. The outer planets are not used, so Saturn is the lord when the profection falls on Aquarius, Jupiter when it falls on Pisces and Mars when it falls on Scorpio.

In the tradition the profected house names the subject of the year, for example the seventh house for partnerships, the tenth for public life and work, the second for resources. The lord of the year names the planet to watch. Its natal condition, its house and its sign in the birth chart, and the planets that meet it during the year, are taken to colour how the topic of the year shows itself. Planets that sit in the profected house natally are also given a part. These readings describe emphasis and do not describe fixed events.

The year of a profection runs from birthday to birthday, so that the change of house comes on the day of the birthday and not on 1 January. Persian and Arabic authors kept the technique and linked it to the solar revolution, the chart cast for the moment the Sun returns to its natal position each year, so that the profected Ascendant and its lord are read together with that chart.

Annual profections are a tradition, not a science. They describe how ancient astrologers divided time and are not advice or a forecast.

AstroSensus shows the current profection year in its free traditional chart: the age, the house that is activated, its sign and the lord of the year, with the traditional rulers. Monthly profections are not calculated. A birth time is needed, because the Ascendant fixes the whole-sign houses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my profection house?

Take your age at the last birthday, divide by twelve and use the remainder, counting from the first house. A remainder of 0 means the first house, 1 means the second, and so on.

Who is the lord of the year?

The domicile ruler of the sign of the profected house, using the traditional rulers only. Saturn rules Aquarius, Jupiter rules Pisces and Mars rules Scorpio.

When does a new profection year begin?

On the birthday. The profection changes from one house to the next on that date, not at the start of the calendar year.
