Uruz
Also known as: ᚢUruz rune*ūruzUr
Uruz (ᚢ) is rune 2 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are strength, endurance and vitality.
Uruz is rune 2 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 2 of Freyr's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "u", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᚢ. The shape is like an angular, upside-down U: a long staff on the left, a shorter one on the right.
The name *ūruz is tied to the aurochs, an extinct wild ox. The Old English poem describes a brave horned beast; in the Scandinavian poems the same rune (úr) means slag or drizzle. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.
In modern reflective practice Uruz is linked above all with strength, endurance and vitality. Uruz is linked today with raw strength and endurance. It is the rune of energy that lets you start from the ground up and keep going — not through strain, but through a steady, calm rhythm.
As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Uruz has two short texts. The first: "Uruz is the aurochs, a wild ox of great strength. Strength need not be loud today: steady effort on one thing and respect for your limits are enough." The second: "Sometimes the strongest move is the one repeated many times. Uruz encourages a return to basics: sleep, movement, one task carried through to the end." A question worth staying with: "What do I want to give my strength to today?"
In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Uruz is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᚢ Uruz — I move forward at my own pace" as a reminder of your own intention.
