Thurisaz

Also known as: ᚦThurisaz rune*þurisazThursThorn

Thurisaz (ᚦ) is rune 3 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are threshold, prudence and resistance.

Thurisaz is rune 3 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 3 of Freyr's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "þ", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᚦ. Shape: a staff with a triangular thorn in the middle, pointing right.

The name *þurisaz means a giant (Old Norse þurs). In the Old English poem the rune is þorn, a thorn painful to touch; the Scandinavian poems speak of giants. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.

In modern reflective practice Thurisaz is linked above all with threshold, prudence and resistance. Today Thurisaz is read as the rune of the threshold: the moment before action, when it is worth pausing. Resistance can be information — it shows where care is needed instead of haste.

As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Thurisaz has two short texts. The first: "Thurisaz is both thorn and threshold. Resistance may be a clue today: before going further, check whether the direction is truly your own." The second: "Not every obstacle has to be overcome at once. Thurisaz invites a pause — strength without thought easily wounds, with thought it opens doors." A question worth staying with: "What is worth pausing before today?"

In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Thurisaz is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᚦ Thurisaz — I pause before I cross the threshold" as a reminder of your own intention.
