Fehu

Also known as: ᚠFehu rune*fehuFeoh

Fehu (ᚠ) is rune 1 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are abundance, exchange and gratitude.

Fehu is rune 1 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 1 of Freyr's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "f", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᚠ. Shape: an upright staff with two branches rising to the right.

The reconstructed name *fehu means "cattle, wealth". The Old English poem speaks of riches that should be shared; the Norwegian and Icelandic poems of gold that stirs strife between kin. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.

In modern reflective practice Fehu is linked above all with abundance, exchange and gratitude. Today Fehu is read as the rune of what you already have: resources, skills, time. It invites you to notice their worth and to exchange them wisely — value grows when it circulates.

As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Fehu has two short texts. The first: "Fehu reminds you that what you have gains value when it circulates. Notice today what has already come your way, and share it with intention." The second: "Abundance begins with noticing. Today, count not what is missing but what is already here — time, people, skills — and decide what to do with it." A question worth staying with: "What do I already have that I take for granted?"

In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Fehu is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᚠ Fehu — I welcome what comes my way" as a reminder of your own intention.
