Nauthiz

Nauthiz (ᚾ) is rune 10 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are need, constraint and resourcefulness.

Nauthiz is rune 10 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 2 of Hagal's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "n", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᚾ. Shape: an upright staff crossed by a short slanting stroke.

The name *naudiz means "need, constraint". The Old English poem (nȳd) says need weighs on the heart, yet can become a help when it is noticed early. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.

In modern reflective practice Nauthiz is linked above all with need, constraint and resourcefulness. Nauthiz is today the rune of need and constraint. It encourages naming honestly what is truly missing, and seeing how a limit teaches resourcefulness.

As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Nauthiz has two short texts. The first: "Nauthiz is need. Name honestly today what is missing — not what you want for a moment, but what you really need." The second: "A limit can sharpen ingenuity. Nauthiz invites you to see what can be done with what is at hand." A question worth staying with: "What do I really need right now?"

In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Nauthiz is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᚾ Nauthiz — I hear my real needs" as a reminder of your own intention.
