Hagalaz
Also known as: ᚺHagalaz rune*haglazHaglazHagall
Hagalaz (ᚺ) is rune 9 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are change, disruption and release.
Hagalaz is rune 9 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 1 of Hagal's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "h", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᚺ. Shape: two upright staves joined by a slanting bar, like an angular H.
The name *haglaz means "hail". The Old English poem calls hail the whitest grain, which melts into water; the Icelandic poem a cold grain and a sickness of serpents. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.
In modern reflective practice Hagalaz is linked above all with change, disruption and release. Today Hagalaz is read as the rune of sudden change — like hail that falls without asking. It encourages separating what you can influence from what you simply have to wait out.
As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Hagalaz has two short texts. The first: "Hagalaz is hail: it arrives suddenly and passes. Tell apart today what you can influence and what you can calmly wait out under a roof." The second: "Hail melts and turns to water. Hagalaz reminds you that a hard moment can be the start of something new — though that is usually seen only later." A question worth staying with: "What can I influence today, and what can I let go of?"
In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Hagalaz is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᚺ Hagalaz — I accept change and look for its meaning" as a reminder of your own intention.
