Laguz

Also known as: ᛚLaguz rune*laguzLaguLaukaz

Laguz (ᛚ) is rune 21 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are water, intuition and flow.

Laguz is rune 21 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 5 of Tyr's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "l", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᛚ. Shape: a staff with a short branch sloping down to the right from the top.

The name *laguz means "water, lake". The Old English poem (lagu) describes a rough sea that frightens sailors; the Icelandic poem (lögr) water falling from the mountains. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.

In modern reflective practice Laguz is linked above all with water, intuition and flow. Today Laguz is read as the rune of water: flow, feeling and intuition. It encourages trusting what you feel before you can name it, and flowing where resistance gets you nowhere.

As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Laguz has two short texts. The first: "Laguz, the rune of water, invites you to go with the flow where resistance gets you nowhere. Trust what you feel before you name it." The second: "Water always finds a way. Laguz encourages you to listen to intuition today — the first quiet impression, before reason drowns it out." A question worth staying with: "Where can I let go of control today?"

In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Laguz is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᛚ Laguz — I flow with trust" as a reminder of your own intention.
