Jera

Also known as: ᛃJera rune*jēraJeranJeraz

Jera (ᛃ) is rune 12 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are cycle, patience and harvest.

Jera is rune 12 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 4 of Hagal's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "j", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᛃ. The shape is two angles offset from each other, like two halves of the turning wheel of the year.

The name *jēra means "year, good harvest". The Old English poem (gēr) calls the year the hope of people when the earth gives its fruit; the Icelandic poem (ár) a good year for all. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.

In modern reflective practice Jera is linked above all with cycle, patience and harvest. Jera is today the rune of the year and the harvest: a cycle in which sowing, growth and reaping each have their time. Patient work bears fruit at its own pace.

As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Jera has two short texts. The first: "Jera is the year and the harvest. See today what has already been sown and give it time — you cannot rush a harvest, but you can tend it." The second: "Every cycle has its seasons. Jera invites you to ask which season an important matter is in today: sowing, growing or reaping." A question worth staying with: "What is ripening in my life at its own pace?"

In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Jera is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᛃ Jera — I trust the seasons and patient work" as a reminder of your own intention.
