Gebo
Also known as: ᚷGebo rune*gebōGyfu
Gebo (ᚷ) is rune 7 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are gift, reciprocity and bond.
Gebo is rune 7 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 7 of Freyr's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "g", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᚷ. The shape is two crossed diagonal strokes, like the letter X.
The name *gebō means "gift". The rune appears in the Old English poem (gyfu), which calls generosity an adornment; it is not in the Younger Futhark, so the Scandinavian poems lack it. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.
In modern reflective practice Gebo is linked above all with gift, reciprocity and bond. Today Gebo is read as the rune of the gift and of reciprocity. Giving and receiving create a bond — and a fair exchange leaves both sides in balance.
As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Gebo has two short texts. The first: "Gebo is the gift. Notice today what you give to others and what you receive from them — and whether the exchange is in balance." The second: "The best gifts are simple: time, attention, a kind word. Gebo invites you to give something today without expectation and to receive without feeling in debt." A question worth staying with: "What do I give and receive in my relationships?"
In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Gebo is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᚷ Gebo — I give and receive with an open heart" as a reminder of your own intention.
