Tiwaz

Also known as: ᛏTiwaz rune*tīwazTeiwazTyr

Tiwaz (ᛏ) is rune 17 of the Elder Futhark; its modern keywords are courage, justice and commitment.

Tiwaz is rune 17 of the Elder Futhark — the runic alphabet used roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century — and rune 1 of Tyr's ætt (an ætt is one of three groups of eight runes). It writes the sound "t", and in the Unicode block "Runic" it is ᛏ. The shape is an arrow pointing up.

The name *tīwaz is the name of the god Tyr (Old Norse Týr). The Icelandic poem calls him the one-handed god; the Old English (tīr) a sign that keeps faith. In the 20th century Nazi movements used the rune. The names of the Elder Futhark runes are reconstructions by linguists, and the rune poems — Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic — were written many centuries later and describe later alphabets. They tell us about a tradition, not about a certain original meaning.

In modern reflective practice Tiwaz is linked above all with courage, justice and commitment. Today Tiwaz is read as the rune of courage and honesty: a promise kept, standing by your values, readiness to give something up for what is right.

As the rune of the day in Cards of the day, Tiwaz has two short texts. The first: "Tiwaz is the rune of the god Tyr, known for keeping his word. Do one thing today in line with your values, even if it takes courage." The second: "Honesty with others starts with honesty with yourself. Tiwaz invites you to check whether a promise you made is still being kept." A question worth staying with: "Which value do I want to stand by today?"

In AstroSensus runes are a tool for reflection, not a prediction. There are no reversed runes and no "blank rune" — the latter is a 20th-century idea, not part of history. In a spread of three or five runes, Tiwaz is always read together with its position and the other runes. The rune can also be your avatar on social media, with the bio line "ᛏ Tiwaz — I stand by what I believe is right" as a reminder of your own intention.

Tiwaz was used in the 20th century, and is still used today, by neo-Nazi movements. The atlas says so plainly: in AstroSensus the rune appears only in a historical and reflective context, never as a sign of belonging.

In the 20th century this rune was misused by extremist movements, so its avatar always keeps the ring and the bio line says what it means.
